The magic of airplanes
I love airplanes. They have always fascinated me since I was a wee boy. The smell of the fuel; the whine of the engines; they excitement of an inflight meal; and the pure magic of such a large piece of machinery being able to fly people around the world.
I am still fascinated by airplanes but flying certainly feels like it has lost a lot of the prestige.
Going on holiday as a boy I could go and visit the cockpit, be part of an online flying kids club, get a boiled sweet before takeoff and landing, get headphones to listen to the onboard radio stations, enjoy a complimentary meal (even on short flights) along with snacks and drinks. None of that really exists now. You get your ticket and everything else is an upsell, apart from the bits that are no longer possible (like visiting the cockpit).
I love looking at vintage photos from the 70s of people flying and how special it must have felt. Flying just doesn’t seem quite so special any more.
