Weekend Happenings
Happy Monday folks. I’m back with another weekend recap.
My wife and I had our kids this weekend. Saturday, we took them out for lunch and to do one of their favorite things: thrifting. I learned two things: I like strawberry Dr Pepper, and CDs are now “old tech”. That’s right, my daughter collects CDs like I collect vinyl. A lot of artists she likes are releasing CDs (and tapes) as novelty items. Saturday she found a copy of “August and Everything After” by Counting Crows on CD and was very happy. I felt ancient after this interaction, but hey, that’s what kids are for, right? To remind you how close you are to death. When I was done filling out the nursing home paperwork, my daughter made me feel better with a CD copy of Thrice’s “The Alchemy Index: Vol I and II” that she found in the store. I will happily add it to my collection of Thrice stuff.
I had some additional fun on Saturday afternoon, as I talked about on Mastodon:

Saturday evening we took the kids to see the new Mean Girls musical at the Alamo Drafthouse. None of them are old enough to remember when the original one was released, which it turns out was just a couple months shy of 20 years ago. A fact that had me calling the nursing home to check on that paperwork from earlier.
The movie was good! It didn’t quite capture the magic of the original, but maybe that’s just my nostalgia talking. The kids were entertained, and I think it succeeded in communicating its humor and overall message to a new generation of kids. Reneé Rapp absolutely commanded the screen when she was on it. She really owned the role of Regina George, and has an incredible singing voice. The other character highlights for me were Auli'i Cravalho as Janis 'Imi'ike and Jaquel Spivey as Damian Hubbard. I think they made me laugh the most. Ashley Park, Jon Hamm, and Busy Philipps were also hilarious.
Sunday was a gloomy, rainy day; perfect for getting some work done around the house and doing some gaming, of which we did both. My daughter has been playing The Last of Us Part 1 on Steam on my gaming PC because her gaming laptop, which is a few years old, won’t play it. She’s probably due for an upgrade this year. (Any recommendations on budget gaming laptops?) She’s loving it, it’s running great on Linux at medium quality settings, and so far she says she hasn’t encountered any bugs. My other daughter went out for manicures with her aunt, while the youngest played Minecraft online with her cousin. We finished the day by delivering a Girl Scout cookie order to my parents and staying for dinner. We sat around chatting and laughing over Chinese food while the youngest daughter was sucked into the Chiefs-Ravens game and hoping to get a glance of Taylor Swift.
All in all, a great weekend.
