I've Got My Head In The Clouds

Nextcloud can do it all

I've played with NextCloud a few times over the years. It always felt like such a behemoth. Everything and the kitchen sink. Probably more than I need. Then I looked at all the separate apps and services I was using for tasks, notes, documents, news, etc. Everything stored in different places, some things only stored locally on a device. NextCloud can do it all, and because it uses open standards like WebDAV, CalDAV, and CardDAV, you can use any app of your choice to sync with NextCloud as long as it supports those standards (or the NextCloud API). So now I've installed the NextCloud Android app from F-Droid, as well as NextCloud Notes, NextPush, and NextCloud News.

I'll be testing Doable and Tasks.org for tasks and to-do lists, both of which sync to NextCloud. Both have a very nice Material Design UI. The benefit of Tasks.org over Doable is that it syncs directly with NextCloud Tasks app and Calendar app, so tasks you create directly in NextCloud will also show up in the app and vice versa. Doable simply backs up your tasks to NextCloud file storage for cross-device syncing.

The NextCloud News app is a pretty decent replacement for other RSS readers I've been using, like Focus Reader and FeedMe. Just two requests: I wish it was able to pull the full content of an article using the Feedbin API, and I want to be able to mark items as read if they're older than a certain number of days. I've passed this feedback along to a NextCloud employee on Mastodon so hopefully it's being considered. Other than it's great and performs well even with extremely large RSS feeds.

NextCloud Notes is a very bare bones but capable app for syncing notes to your NextCloud server. There's an app I really like called Noterly from a dev named Tom Chapman. It doesn't currently have any sort of cloud syncing, but I have sent the dev a feature request to have this functionality added. I have yet to try Joplin, Obsidian, or any other notes apps that sync with NextCloud.

NextPush is working great as a push notification server for some of my Mastodon apps that support UnifiedPush. I'm also happily backing up my calendar and contacts from my phone to my NextCloud server. Next I'll look into syncing those items as well with the DAVx5 app. I may also give NextCloud talk a try for chatting with some friends and family. I haven't yet tried syncing photos to NextCloud but before I do that I'll need to mount some object storage so I don't fill up my server's disk. I'd like to try NextCloud photos, Immich, and Ente (which I am currently using as a backup for Google Photos) to see how they compare.
