The Sound of My Voice

life

Micro.blog recently released an audio feature that allows you to upload a voice narration of your blog post. It’s the complete opposite of what you’d usually see where people would narrate their blog posts, and an AI will transcribe it into text. Manton (creator of Mb) mentions in his blog:

What struck me as particularly relevant now as we’re about to be swamped with AI-generated content is that there’s no substitute for the human voice.

This is all super fascinating to me. One, because I have been enjoying hearing the individuals narrating their blog post and it’s a breath of fresh air hearing the actual human voice behind the words. Two, I’m super tempted to do it (and not surprising to the people around me) but I actually kind of dislike the sound of my voice

I once have been told I have a radio voice by a stranger in the metro. I have no idea what that means, and even if I did, I really don’t think so. I do a lot of recordings at work when I am presenting, facilitating or training people, and always avoid watching the playbacks so that I don’t have to listen to my voice. It’s an odd thing to dislike, but that’s where I’m at.

Although I’m not a huge fan of my voice, 5 years ago, I did appear (or rather my voice did) in a voice over commercial for a popular (yet controversional) food establishment. It played for 2-3 years on air - on the radio, commercials in streaming apps, and TV commercials. There’s a big chance you’ve probably heard my voice, and just didn’t know it.

All that to say that, I’m still wondering whether or not to use this new voice feature on Mb myself, but for now, I’ll just enjoy listening to everybody else’s.

Side Note(s):

  • This post is Day 28 of the WeblogPoMo2024 challenge.
  • I enjoyed doing the commercial recording, and probably wouldn’t say No if other companies approached me for it… although it’s just not something I seek out pro-actively.
  • Would you use this feature?
