CampSnap: screen free toy camera

photography

One of my favorite daily carry is my CampSnap Camera. It’s a scree-free digital toy camera that is super fun to use. It’s an extremely low tech, no-frills camera that encourages you to stay in the moment when you’re out and about. It’s lightweight so I can just put it in my pocket or purse, forget it’s there until I need it.

Hands down my favorite part of this camera (and probably its selling point) really is the screen-free aspect of it. The back of the camera just has a counter for how many photos you’ve taken so far (it can hold 2000 photos), with a toggle of on/off/auto for the flash (which is super bright so I typically have this off). The lack of immediate feedback after taking a photo encourages me to be more thoughtful and intentional with what I capture, a little reminiscent of when doing film photography.

Their software updates allow you to change up the “filter” that’s installed in the camera. They have their OG filter which leans a little colder, vintage that is warmer with yellow/green tint, and the highly coveted black and white filter. Although my favorite one is the vintage filter, the black and white renders really good with not blowing out highlights. I own 3 CampSnap cameras for each filter, although I typically carry the one with the vintage filter, and at times the b&w. Within the community, you’ll find people who also own a few just for this reason.

It’s definitely a fun toy camera to use but at times can have a learning curve. There are a few people who get frustrated with blown out highlights, or the composition not matching what they intended when the photos come out due to the mismatch of what they see in the viewfinder. I think that once you get used to it, it’s easy to have fun with it.

Sample photos with the CampSnap using the vintage filter by me.
